Swing Gate Bearings

10/13/2010 8:54 AM

I want to put up an iron swing gate at the beginning of a drive off of a main road.

The plan is to manually open and close for now, but maybe some day install an operator.

The question I have is what kind of bearings to us on the gate posts.

The bearings have to be suitable for the severe Minnesota winters and maintenance optional.

Good Morning Coldspot,

How about something like this but in a rubber sealed version (sealed on both ends) with a grease fitting.

EDIT: This one appears to be sealed and has Zerk (grease) fittings: http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinges/GATE+HINGES+AND+HARDWARE/Gate+Pivot+and+Weld-On+Hinges/Barrel+Weld-On+Hinge%2C+Ball+Bearing

If you can't find something at the site provided by KJK/USA, you don't need it.

My first thought was a plain strap hinge, but it seems that you have tons of choices.

Good luck.

Here are a few sites that offer advice about hinge selection:

Yes, that is good stuff...

I see that on page 4 there is a tutorial on forces acting on a door. These are the forces to be resisted by the hinges or pivots.
