could be torque converter as used on motor vehicles

its also a way of coupling engine to output shaft to transfer power but also so output shaft can be stopped without damaging engine

The Wikipedia article gives a description and history, but lacks pictures. Googling "fluid coupling" produces several images (about the 3rd or 4th hit), as well as many vendors, etc. Combining this information should be helpful.
