Air Bag Light - 2000 Ford Explorer Sport

10/19/2010 7:54 AM

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. I have noticed the Air Bag light flashing a few times then came on and went back off. What would cause that? Please help.

Thanks

I can think of a few reasons why that might happen -- but frankly, if it were my car I wouldn't waste my time asking a bunch of strangers on an internet web site about a valuable safety device in my car.

I'd take the car directly to a nearby Ford dealership service department and have them check it out.

As a start, get someone to read the trouble codes stored in the car's memory. Then go back to dealer. Almost no repairs are possible except at the dealer. Good luck.

Ditto wot the others have said, Get codes read, the light is there to let you know there is a fault.

The item is a safety Critical item and needs urgent attention two possible scenarios

the system wont work at all

the system will deploy bags at wrong times. ( this has lead to fatalities)

Get it checked out

A gallon of milk on the front seat will do that to my car.

Any weight on the pass seat can activate the switch in the seat and keep the seatbelt chime and light on until you either remove the weight or buckle the belt.

If you were to pull the fault codes for the SRS system you would likely get a clock spring or a steering speed sensor error.

To fix it: hie thee to a Ford dealer or search for a local airbag repair shop. They both would have the necessary parts and software to synchronize the new part(s) with the CEM and SRS modules.

It's usually better to let trained professionals deal with pyrotechnic devices and control systems thereof.

Google "Air Bag flashing ford explorer" and you will see many discussions on this. Many point to a problem with a loose connection under the passenger seat. Any dealer should know about this. I'd also consult the owners manual to see if there is any information there.

It's a code 28 almost for sure. Check the connector under the passenger seat...it causes a fault about side airbags if it is not intact. Tug on the wires, and when they pull loose, reconnect them to the plug and you're set.

Code 28.

Side airbag fault

Sensor connection under passenger seat.

Reconnect loose wires.

I checked the wire like you said under the passenger seat. It would'nt come loose but I could push it in a little bit. I started it up and the light went off. Thanks very MUCH. It saved me $90.00 I didn't have for the Ford Dealer to check it. Thanks again.
