Non hectic

The trouble many business administrators have with the idea of exponential growth, is that the most common exponential function one finds in real life has at least one, if not many imaginary components in the power variable.

You can only accomplish, "better exponential growth as well as non hectic", if your parents own the company.

Otherwise, try to find a company full of underachievers, at least you'll have a chance there.

If you are looking for a field where you can make an impact and see continuously improving opportunities- look at energy conservation/environmental improvement.

Before you go off to get a masters, go to an accredited school and become a 6-Sigma Black Belt (check out the American Society of Quality website- they "run" the 6-Sigma program). At the same time, check out the Association of Energy Engineers site for training toward becoming a Certified Energy Manager, at least.

There is lots of information available, and several short programs for skill enhancement, in the energy conservation field. The 6-Sigma training will allow you to work even more effectively in the field- it focuses your problem solving skills.

If you end up working for someone- you will be able to get a very good job with a secure future. You may also decide to "go it alone" or find a couple business partners who can enhance your business operation skills.

Good Luck

energygod -- I know you are sincere about your recommendation for engineers to do the 6 Sigma black belt buzz word training program. I suppose this is just a reality in a world of endless litigation and CEOs who couldn't manufacture a ham sandwich if their life depended on it. But it makes me want to vomit.

30 years ago when the idea of quality engineers started to surface all us ME's pretty much agreed that career path was for the people who couldn't cut it as a mechanical engineer.

About that time Merhyle F. Spotts, who had written a terrific machine design text, did a some chapters on statistical tolerancing for one of his books. We ME's in my circle pretty much agreed that this was a neat new idea and well worth adding to our bag of tricks. It was especially useful if you had a good understanding of the manufacturing process that would be used for the design in question.

But make an entire discipline out of it? What ever happened to professional excellence? Oh, I know. MBA's decided that most of the time it was an unneeded luxury.

Sighhhhhh ……… that was yesterday. Today you just need to talk the talk and be understood by the boss. You need to stay at your desk until the boss goes home and then spend the next 3 hours playing video games on your iphone. Then he will think you are some kind of selfless hard working genius, reward you with a 20% raise and take your name off the layoff list. Oh yeah …….. make sure you are good at Powerpoint. The brass loves to be entertained.

By the way (on topic after the drift) 3 years ago I advised my oldest son, an ME like myself, to get some campaign ribbons in the world of renewable energy product development. He's doing that now and is quite successful at it. .....Ed Weldon

If it's non-hectic you're after be prepared for the exponent of that growth to be negative.

Sorry, if you took offense.

But your reference to Excedrin makes no sense at all.

I found Temazepam & Fluoxetine excellent for a non hectic working regime, when I wasn't asleep I was totally spaced out.

I would recommend that you get some actual work experience before heading back for the advanced degree. Which field is appropriate for you depends on what inspires passion. If you are primarily interested in exponential growth in your personal financial resources, get out of engineering- go in to banking or become a stock broker. If you define exponential growth in terms of expanding your understanding of the world about you, then that which inspires passion is what drives your advance...If you want a non-hectic lifestyle, abandon engineering and become a gardener or a security guard at K-Mart.

Mechanical Engineering is a versatile branch of engineering. One gets paper degree as a qualification to practice. Experience makes you gradually to become a full fledged engineer. One can get experience if he works and put his heart and soul for the project. No pain no gain. Thermal engineering appears to provide challenging opportunities.

Environmental engineering is an ever growing field. With a master's degree or a doctorate, you could work for the EPA and be making six figures. I will be going for my MSME soon to increase my chances of a federal job. You can look on usajobs dot com to view the job descriptions.

Like someone above said, find an area that really interests you and you will find teh career path that will be most satisfying for you. I am an outdoor enthusiast so protecting the environment is very interesting to me and is rewarding.

Re: Which Field is Better

Actually, I would probably suggest marketing to management route as this would be less demanding and hectic, and you get to make the final engineering decisions over-riding the engineers themselves on the basis of cost or some other justification you want for your opinion. Also you won't actually have to know anything and could be more of the concept guy rather than the problem solver who has to figure out how to make the concepts actually work. In addition it tends to pay substantially more, the perks are much better, get to go to parties and such to network with "potential clients" on company dime, travel to and stay in nicer places to "meet with clients", etc.. then as you get older it is easier for a marketer educated as an engineer to move into management, because you have all the relationships with the clients, and to most companies personal client relationships are far more important than quality or quantity of production or deliverables. However, they always want to create the superficial appearance of highly qualified personnel, so it is important to have the engineering degree and possibly a PE license on the resume.

Right on all of this. But you gotta have the right personality makeup to succeed in sales.

Too many of us engineers would rather twiddle around with things by ourselves than "... go to parties and such to network with potential clients".

The really critical issue here is to figure out which you are early in life and not wait till you are too far down the wrong career track.
