Have you tried Wikipedia or other elementary grammatical information sources?

Perhaps, if you look for the answer first, then when you give up you can come back.

This is not a free reference service, but, the answer may lie in the size of opening.

A Filter looks white crystle - like in a plastic bowl used in compressed air line and your water filter in your kitchen.

A strainer is Y-type and has a perforated screen(similar to your tea strainer in the kitchen) and does not look like a filter.

A filter is best for coffee but you can't beat the good old strainer for early morning breakfast tea. I recommend Yorkshire Extra Strong if you can get it.

What's confusing about waking up to bacon, scrambled eggs, Lincolnshire sausage and a grilled tomato all washed down with Strong Yorkshire tea. (mustn't forget the fried bread and toast).

I'm feeling hungry now! The trouble is I've got to do the cooking.

If you read this article here on QFilter.com you will find the answer to your question. Its a great article that gives a nice simplified overview of the process of Liquid Filtration, including the difference between a filter and a strainer.
