How to Repair Damage on Emaille Inside a Steel Vessel

10/21/2010 2:14 AM

Stationed in the Netherlands, one of my college's asked me if I know a company, with experience in the repair of emaille.

A large chip ok emaille has come of inside one of their vessels.

The reason for the emaille, it is a heavy chemical plant where he is working now. Does someone have experience in a similar problem? The only thing we could find is some experiments done by the "Karl-Winnacker-Institut" in Germany, if you exclude the rapairs on bath tubs.

Allow me to translate emaille into English as enamel.

I am not sure if it is relevant, but I have seen glass lined reactors repaired with plugs of tantalum.

The manufacturer should know how to do such a repair.

I believe you may have to replace the damaged vessel...

First, you must remove the existing 'tub'. There are many CR4 members who have some knowledge of breaking such a vessel into smaller pieces, thus allowing removal. Perhaps one of them can offer advice on the technique.

Oh, come on! Someone had to say it!

Well, it does depend on what the damage is, see. 'coz it might not 'ave to come out - it might be repairable. Dave and I can't do it so I'll come clean: the OP needs to get on the blower to the vessel manufacturer. They are bound to be able to do it. I knew this outfit in Scotand that done some for me many year ago. Now, what was their name? Er...

Gottit! Pfaudler-Balfour, I think it was. They're in the phone book, and probably on the wibbly-wobbly-web too. <Cough, sniffle> Damn this cold! It might be turning to 'flu! <Sneeze> Ooooh. Someone e-mail me a new hankie! <Splutter> And stop smashing up baths, you lot; I could do with one right now....
