Warpage

10/21/2010 10:58 AM

While machining 6061-T6511 plate material 16" long x 9.312 wide with 2 thicknesses of .528" and stepped to .2125" i am experiencing a warpage of .003 - .009" warpage. We rough machine the blank then stress relieve it at 350° for 4 hours than finish machine the part. Is there anything we can do differently that would reduce the amount of warpage we are getting.

You could remove some material from the opposite side of the plate in those areas, thus equalizing the stress.

Check the PWHT heat input and cooling rates, probably you got you increase the time and decrease the heat input increments, did you provide stiffeners during PWHT process?
