Galling Between SS Anchor Bolt and Nut !!

10/21/2010 10:20 AM

316 SS anchor bolts will be used for base plates for Booster pump pads , we will use also 316 ss nuts , the idea of may having galling is raised up by the designer engineers , some of them said that we don't have to tight the nuts too much to avoid the seizing , some other said that we may use 316 ss boltsa and 304 ss nuts , or to use lubricants , others preferred to use galvanized anchor bolts ASTM A307 instead of stainless steel , I think that pumps baseplates do not need to be tightened too much and we will not have any high temperature at the baseplate ???

do you think taht we may have galling with the SS anchor bolts and nuts ?? and what is your best solution ??? thanks

Use the A307 galvanized anchor bolts, unless the environment is excessively corrosive. Otherwise use anti-seize and torque nuts as recommended. Not too tight and not too loose. Do it per Goldilocks, "Just right!"

Banu....

"Do we think that there will be galling..........YES !!! YES ...YES !!!!"

"What is the best solution ?" Use fastener materials with significantly different hardnesses that will meet your design requirements..!!

Again.....please explain why stainless materials are being used for anchor bolts..???

Why do you not use a suitably coated fastener system??

Explain in detail....describe your process

The system is for pumping potable water . In the past , installed the stainless steel anchor bolts with no problems , but this time I have alot of engineers talking and raising up the issue regarding the galling of SS . I think the best is clean the threads and to tight them properly to avoid any seizing , and we may use grease or seizing compund ... any other inputs are highly appreciated ...

Here are some search results that discuss this issue:

In particular, the first hit seems like a good start.

Maybe that's what brass nuts are for.

SS 316 material should be a better choice over 304 or Galvanized nuts, dissimilar material may cause corrosion issues (if you use galvanized nuts) due to Galling which may may occur. PM program should be initiated and regular visual inspection can help you monitor the condition, Do not tight too much.
