Requirement of Generator Circuit Breaker

10/23/2010 7:26 AM

What is the requirement of generator circuit breaker in power plant? Can't generator be tripped directly by switchyard bay breaker? In my previous company there was not GCB, generator was directly connected to grid with GT + switchyard breaker. While, in my present company, there is a Generator + GCB + GT + switchyard breaker scheme.

What is the criteria that GCB should be there in design or not?

Even though it is called a "Circuit Breaker", it can only be used as a switch-cum-isolator as it does not have any short-circuit making and/or short circuit breaking capacity. It is more used as an isolator.

Where the generator is connected to GT with circuit breaker in between, auxiliary power for power station can be drawn from the grid through GT (back charging) while keeping the generator isolated during any shut down.

IT DEPENDS ON THE USAGE AND APPLICATION.

FOR LARGE UMPPS THERE IS NO GCB.

IF THERE IS A GCB FOR SMALLER GT BASED PLANTS UPTO 200MW SINGLE UNIT THE AUXILLARY TRANSFORMER CAN BE SAVED .

BASICALLY IT OFFERS A LOT OF ADVANTAGES AND FLEXIBILITY IN CASE YOU HAVE A GCB.

AS FOR EXAMPLE IN INDIA TATA MUNDRA 5X800MW UNITS ALSO GCB IS USED.
