Short Circuit Current

10/23/2010 9:08 AM

Please help me obtaining the information and the principle to find out the Short Circuit Current at the Bus bar of Main Panel Board.

The following are the details of Transformer secondary side Fault Current:

Transformer rating is 33/0.415 kV, 2000 kVA with Z = 7%
Fault MVA = 2/0.07 = 28.57 MVA
Fault Current = 28.57 / (1.732*0.415) = 40 kA (approx).

The easiest way is to take IR picture. The path of current in short circuit would be shown on the picture. Or hoover your hand over and yoiu might detect heat radiating from the shorted wires.

Hover your hand over it! You wouldn't have a hand left!

I don't think IR cameras work at 20m distance, which is as close as I'd go!

Your calculation is correct. There are many earlier threads available for this sort of calculation. Here is one of them:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/43731/Current-on-Transformer-Primary-Side

The calculation here is done little differently but the end result is same.

If you have more interest about the fault current calculation methods, see this thread: http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/56152/Busbar-Design

Hope you got helped.
