you are a metal scap dealer and your job is to buy scap by weight. It is a contractor manufacturing the tank that needs to come to you with his requirement of plate size and thickness which again you will sell by weight/choice. What is there to waste so much time with you and standards and dimensions and thickness of each plate as per dictated volumes.Metal prices are increaaing day by day and irrespective, as a scrap dealer you will make minimum over 100% to 200% profit anyway.

Hello ducon.

OP is trying to determine approx weight of scrap steel. The true weight can be determined when trucks roll over the scales. I assume he must dismantle tanks (expense), transport the scrap (expense), sort and store the steel (expense) and comply with safety regulations along the way (expense).

What difference does it make to you how much he makes?

If the scrap business is 100% profit, I want in! Zero dollars outgo, I keep 100% of income (not possible for more that 100% profit).

Dear Doorman, I am happy whatever he makes but since he purchases by weight and sells by weight he should not be concerned on the engineering.

If the scrap business is 100% profit, I want in! Then you need to settle in India/Pakistan. Believe me. These guys are so rich selling scraps that they can buy you and me 10 times yet not feel anything. Ask him.

Large tanks can be made with varying shell thickness, as you describe, but unless you can get the original drawings, you would only be guessing for any particular tank.

An ultrasonic thickness tester might be ideal for your business, if you must do such estimations often.

Hie, Metal Trader

Yes , its true that tank strake thicknesses decrease with tank height. However, some manufacturers may choose to have one thickness throughout.

The best solution is for you to have thickness surveys done on the tanks for you to be able to work with actuals.

Dear sirs, thank u all for replying to my mail....if the steel tanks are auctioned for weight then the question i asked in the forum is just baseless...actually i have to qoute an amount for these tanks as an entire lot for this i hav to estimate the approx weight and put a total price....i gt the data from the standards used in tank making..the thickness of the tank plate depends on the dia of the tank..i vil share you the data in my next mail... Metal scrap business is profitable only if u know how the market goes and a good technical knowledge..

Being some what of a handy person I would check the thickness of the top plate and then the bottom plate add them together then divide by two.. This should give you a good average of what the thickness would be if it were all the same. Then figure the circumference and finish out the calculation per pound... If it looks a little short add some if too much take a little off. Scrapping is not exactly an exact science.. But, a money maker..

Tornado gave you the best option, for a minimal expense purchase a thickness gage that will check ferric and non-ferric metals… This will give you quick and painless answers…
