So your building doesn't sink into the ground.

The Soil Bearing Capacity is the most important criterion which dictates the design of civil foundation for any building/machinery foundation etc.

Loose soil will need a larger and deeper foundation some times pile foundation and vise-versa.

Generally 20 Tonnes/Sq.Ft., or 215.168 Tonnes/Sq. Metre, is considered as safe load bearing capacity for the soil, and designing the foundation.

The seismic zone also to be considered for the foundation design and size of foundation may vary. We should not ignore this phenomena and conduct the test for determining load bearing capacity of the soil by competent authority/laboratory.
