Mud Saw

10/26/2010 12:17 PM

Am trying to find a design for a friend. He is an extreme rock hound and has a lot of homemade equipment. He heard of a rock saw refered to as a "Mud Saw". From his description, it consists of a cable running in an extremely slow reciprocating motion with a mixture of water and grit (hence the term "Mud") flowing onto the cable. I have told him I can fab it up for him if he can get me pictures or a design plan. The problem is that neither of us can find anything of the sort online. Lots of descriptions, no pictures or drawings. Can any of you help?

We are looking to run this off solar, wind or water power as we have had some good luck with those power sources so far.

You might look up "power hack saw" and simply adapt the frame to hold a length of cable. Sort of like an industrial cheese slicer?

A mud saw is an old style of rock cutting saw. Most of the time people today use a diamond saw, where the industrial diamonds are attached to the saw. I remember seeing a mud saw blade that consisted of nothing more than a blued steel wire that had a spiral groove pressed into the metal to carry the mud. The simplest mud saw uses a multifiber string to move the mud across the stone. Fortunately strings are cheap and readily available because this type of a saw breaks often. This does point out the fundamental flaw of all mud saws. The cord that carries the mud is not as durable as the stone being cut. There's also no shock absorption between the cutting grit and the carrier of the grit thus increasing the likelihood of breaking the blade. But as the link points out, with proper maintenance (aka frequent repairs) a mud saw can do exceptional work.

As I stated in my request, I don't need any more descriptions, I know what a mud saw is, I just would like to see one.

Thats not far off of our methods, when power is not an issue, our wind mills are basically engine fans rigged to gearboxes.

our rock tumblers only need to turn at 8 to 14 rpm

From the description of an old steam powered unit, this mud saw seems to be about 15 to 45 recip. per min.

We have a parts recycling place just down the road where we seem to always find what we need for scrap steel price.

Now that you have the mechanics, be advised that you can buy diamond coated steel wire and eliminate the mud.

We have drilled holes in glass using a copper tube in a hand drill gun , emery grit and Teepol detergent. The emery gets embedded in the copper and cuts through glass. Holes up to 4" diameter in a foot thick concrete could be made.

Copper wire in a hacksaw frame was likewise used with emery grit for cutting window glass sheets.
