What is that Electronics Engineers Should Plan?

03/16/2007 11:53 PM

Hello Young Friends

These days, it is becoming harder for electronics engineers to plan their future. Hence, those who have undergone serious experience can guide others who are now just at the starting point of the race.

Here are some points that may help. You with experience can add up whatever you feel may work better for planning future by the young engineers.

1. Under ROHS PCB design techniques and learn PCB design and fabrication techniques. No electronics is done without making PCBs so that is the starting point for this business. If you do like software, PCB CAD will be a great idea for you. Look at Mentor Graphics, ORCAD etc.

2. If you are good at Physics or antenna design then RF communication may be ideal. There is lots of wireless communication these days. Designing RF circuits needs lots of education and training and hence, go for higher degree in RF communication if you like this area.

3. Optoelectronics and fiber optics is now the backbone of high speed communication. This may require some training but good field to work on.

4. Sensors and signal communication is the key in industrial automation. It is easy to enter this field. Also look at PLCs to program and interface with sensors.

5. VLSI, ASIC design is for building future in high technology and one can get some training and start with simple designs from XILINX and ALTERA VHDL and VERILOG training.

6. Embedded Systems are everywhere, so this area is the key to intelligent devices. One can start with simple Microcontroller Training Kits and move on to DSP and VLSI based Embedded Systems.

7. Specialized electronics areas are; power electronics, industrial electronics, manufacturing process electronics, environmental electronics, medical electronics, defense electronics, space electronics, communication electronics, education electronics, domestic electronics, security electronics etc. Hence look for the right area where you wish to remain and build your life. Training is the key to fast starting point and to win the race.

If you are in India and want to get trained in some of the above areas, then you may find some training institute near your city. Write to me if you want to know more specific to your interest. It is worth asking experts and knowing the facts ahead of time as electronics requires expertize at work and only imagination is not enough.

Good luck.

Dear Shyam,

Thanks for your thoughts.

Youger generations Like me need your guidance and suppport to develope our knowledge and skills.
I have completed my Diploma in EEE and worked in various fields related to electrical HV Installations and maintenance.
Later I completed my BE from annaunivesity (Part time ) in ECE and changed my carrier in PCB Design and working in RF & Microwave Pcb designs in chennai.

I wish to develope my knowledge in RF and as well as in digital HW design.

Pl let me if there are courses in RF design ( Distance learning) with resonable fees.

Regards,

Venkatesan

Dear Venkatesan

Nice to hear that you have interest in RF communication devices.

You can start with simple kits from www.radiometrix.com and you can get their kits from us also. Radiometrix is now displaying their products in India in Pragati Maidan New Delhi March 20-23, 2007 under 15th Convergence India 2007.

Other sources are

www.chipcon.com

www.lprs.co.uk

www.maxim-ic.com

You can also try blue tooth devices from other sources.

There are some training centers in RF design and perhaps CHIPCON people can give more idea.

If you wish to go for quality control then learn Six Sigma -Technology Quality Evaluation Procedures. Also learn standards and way to implement them. There are Indian standards like ISI and international standards. Follow the book.

Hi Sir,

I'm a Electronics & Communication Graduate from chennai.Your message was inspiring,I've interest in communication field.. but I got job in Medical Equipment sales & service.. Now I feel that I could've waited & tried more companies or opted for courses you'd mentioned..If at all I'd some one to guide me..I'd have been in my dream career.

So fellow Electronic guyz don't go after IT jobs or other high profile jobs.. or else you'd repent later for having wasted your talent and following the manger..

Regards,

Senthil.K

Communication is a very general term and hence focus on one side of it. Optical communication, internet backbone high speed communication, communication switches, wireless communication, base station and network in wireless, GPRS, voice and data on phone line or broadband communication, network communication and protocol development, software protection on network etc. Fild out which area is moore suited for your interest. These days you have many choices and can work in narrow area as there is lots of technology involved in each area.

Too bad you lack appreciation for Medical Device sales and service. One of the most rewarding experiences I ever recieved was after watching one of my company's cardiac pacemakers installed in a five year old girl. I visited her the next day and her doctor thanked me for bringing his attention to the specialized features of our company's pacer over the competition's. It seems without the special features (pacer mediated tachycardia) the little girl would have been on drugs as well as a pacemaker for the rest of her life. Ultimately the drugs would cause a toxic reaction and interfere with her growth and quality of life. The doctor and the parents made me feel like a hero.

Re: What is that Electronics Engineers Should Plan?

I agree that Electronics Engineering requires knowledge in the following areas other than electronics to a good level.

1. Physics and chemistry of semiconductors, metals, and many chemicals used in electronics manufacturing and application materials.

2. Biophysics and biochemistry, optics, imaging and image processing, X-ray and radiation Physics for medical electronics

3. Space Physics for space research and remote sensing electronics

4. Defense Technology for defense electronics

5. Data acquisition, digital signal processing, mathematical modeling, FEM, Fluid Dynamics etc

6. ASIC and VLSI design technology

7. CAD CAM software

Hence, you can notice that an electronics engineer is expected to know everything on the earth. It is not an easy task to be an electronics engineer. If you find one then respect that person for being what is impossible for others to be one like that.

I have a training center at Gwalior, India where engineers use paid services to find facilities to learn and to do some good electronics useful for research and industry. This facility was created to help engineers in India to learn high technology designs which otherwise was not available for them any where in India. Training programs are from 1-week to 20-weeks duration and are designed for specific need.

There are some other organizations in India, which may also provide specific training so look for these on the net.

Hi Mr. Shyam,

Im a graduate of Mechl eng'g,i am interested in the topic #4. Sensors and signal communication is the key in industrial automation. It is easy to enter this field. Also look at PLCs to program and interface with sensors...im working on a plastic injection company as a technician, when there is a trouble regarding on electronics we have to call technician outside, the production was delayed. What shall I do,or what is your advice for me to learn.

thanks and have a nice day,

Injection moulding more short an art and you should have learnt from experienced technician. Basically you need to know the moisture of the plastic and temperature to which you need to heat and time for which the injected plastic need to become solid. You may also have to know air pressure if it is used to give size and shape by air pressure in the cavity. These are the basic parameters and they are standard for the type of plastic grain you use.

Sensors are of

temperature

pressure

moisture

Controllers used are

Temperature

Pressure

Moisture

Timer

What is that you find difficult. You need to discuss that with some one is doing the job.
