Unbalance Current Measurement Through Tong Tester

11/02/2010 2:58 AM

Will Ac clamp meter show any reading when it is being used to measure the current of a 3-ph induction motor taking unbalance current?

Give more details, are you measuring the whole cable including the armourings or just around the cores.

if the current between the 3 phases are balanced, then you should read zero amps, because your tong tester will only read the difference.

Indeed. If the original poster puts a tong tester over three phases and neutral the thing will read zero, whether balanced or unbalanced. It has to - unless something is spraying electrons all over the room....

If the motor's connection is delta. But in case the connection is star and the neutral is at the central point (what, although, is not done today any more), the currents in the unbalanced windings will all be cancelled, I believe.
