Earth Fault Problem - Main Feeder Tripping on Earth Fault

11/02/2010 2:43 AM

Hi guys please help

I got an earth fault problem, the main feeder (525V) which is equipt with 500mA E/sec with 630A main circuit breaker supplies the substation (with 2 x 120mm square cables). At the substation supplied, we have 250mA E/sec for load/equipment protection. There are plus minus 15 panels/loads on this main feeders at the SUB.supplied.

The problem is the 500mA E/sec (the main feeder) keep on tripping on earth fault. We tested all the cables, 250mA E/sec and they all tested positive we even change the 500mA E/sec both relay and the core balance (CT) at the main feeder but it still keep on tripping. we tested unbalance current on each load and we got something like 0.1A or 0.2A and on some panels we even got 0A, which is not enough to trip the 250mA E/sec. But on the main feeder cables unbalance current is around 0.8 to 0.9A which is enough to trip the 500mA E/sec.

Our final decision was to change the 500mA E/sec to 1000mA which will cater for 0.9A.

DO YOU GUYS THINK THIS WILL SOLVE OUR PROBLEM? BECAUSE ALL THIS YEARS THE 500mA WAS WORKING FIND.

What's changed? If 500mA was working fine there should be no reason to change.

Is it a single core balance CT around the two cables or two CT's (one around each) or separate CT's for each phase? There are variations these are 3 that I just thought of.
My thinking being are you detecting an imbalance in load between cables? But that should equal it's self out.

Sorry but this is one to ponder upon

Is a single core balance CT around the 3 busbar that are connected to 2x120mm square cables ( 525V 3 phase 3 wire system) which supply the sub.

And by measuring around 3 cores of each main cable (120mm) using tong tester (ammeter) we get 0.8 to .09A and on the load cables, some are 0.1 to 0.2A and some are zeroA. and we test all the cables and the load/motors (using 1000V megger) and they are all clear to earth. and all the motor windings resistance are balanced.

All I can suggest then is that your getting a cumulative leakage from the outgoing feeds. But then these have a habit of cancelling themselves out?

It won't solve the problem - it will stop the problem being indicated!

Isolate the system, and check for continuity between earth and neutral on the downstream circuits. Once found, eliminate the erroneous connection(s) between them.
