Q-1 : Both terms seem to be used to suite grammer....can't think about the difference.

Q-2 : Passivation is done to clean up the metal surface to remove residue which may cause corrosion. Done by chemical cleaning.

To preserve Passivation maybe a part of the effort, preservation of the Vessels/Pipes internals are normally done by keeping them under purge (N2), External surfaces by painting etc.

Machine Parts etc are kept in Vacuum seals etc.. and so on and so forth.

Hope this helps

Pipe Installation is placement of a pipe [usually pre-assembled or in one piece] in the proper area, whereas erection is assembly of the pipe [several sections] in the service area after which it is considered Installed.

Passivation is a passive [not intended or accomplished by an act] event that occurs naturally. Example: When new concrete is poured it has a pH of 13-13.2, this high [alkaline] pH provides a Passivating Layer on reinforcing steel and it will not rust as long as this layer is in place [ It is passive ] As the pH drops surrounding the steel and oxygen and moisture carry contaminates to the steel surface. Corrosion cells form and rust begins!

At that point preservation efforts attempt to stop ingress of contaminates to preserve the steel and provide a No - Low oxygen Moisture environment hoping to preserve, or at least slow the corrosion potential. That is Preservation!
