I travel a lot around Saudi, UAE, Qatar etc. The issues I have tend to be related aroundcommunication based systems. As the telecoms companies are state owned monopolies, they do not want to promite IP based technlogies that can promote free communication. An easy example of this is facebook, or LinkedIn, but also leadson to any IP technology including our stock control system.

I am writing a series of articles about engineering around the world on this site, if you want to have a look.

It's not the technology that's being forbidden but the contact with outside and the ideas of the free world that would under mined such states. It's about being able to control that. If they give free will to do what you would like on your computer where would it lead.

Technology brings knowledge.

Knowledge is power.

Power is threat to those in power.

Therefore, no technology.

The one who doesn't work, doesn't make mistakes.

The one who doesn't do any mistakes, must be promoted.

If you show this to your boss, just to make sure that he will remember you, tell him that everybody climbs the hierarchy ladder until reaches his level of incompetency!

Such countries deserve to suffer from brain drain, when the brightest people move elsewhere.

Um - Tornado and other guys above;

I suspect what the OP means is the sites have his country "blocked" or "zone excluded" - not that OP's government is blocking the sites.

It's quite common to get "not available in your zone" or country, when following links posted on CR4.

PopSci comes to mind as one that this message has to be got around regularly. Or the other BS one "page cannot be found", when every one else is discussing it.

But I'd say music/videos are the most "forbidden" and that's about money, not government.

Well that didn't take long to manifest

(link posted on CR4 - to US Popsci site, redirects to Popsci sites in 'other zones' - which don't link back)

Re: TECHNOLOGY is forbidden

15 years ago i thought mobile phones were great, now because of technology, they are banned from our workplace, I banned them. Give people an inch and they will take a mile. The problem sometimes is generational, young people are fairly incapable of relying on themselves, take away the phone and computer and most have no idea what to do. So in some respects technology is a bad thing. If there is an emergency while you're at work your partner can call the company. I am starting to think it should be banned for other reasons, phones have our children in debt from the day they start using them, and they have remove social skills and self reliance, self entertainment or learning something new, now it is the same thing everyday, texting or reading facebook. Sometimes there is a great truth to control, look at russia, second most powerful nation in the world becomes a dump run by gangsters the moment you bring in democrcy and western culture. Don't be too quick to Judge all reasoning behind control, not all of it is as bad as it first appears, though yes having technology websites blocked does seem absurd to say the least.

The question you need to ask is what would you make illegal? and how would the rest of the world viiew that? For me it would be mobile phones with screens.

nice comment dude My problem actually is why for example i can download application for Iphone in Uk but i can't in my country Syria... Technology is like a sword..it could be used both ways.... It is like when the Chinese people have invented the gun powder..they did actually for fireworks..and now see what gun powder is used for...people fight, kill to get technology...and mobile phones are the simpler image of technology

Yes, I saw an animated movie the other day that has been out for a while called, WALL-E whilst amusing is one of my greatest fears coming true each day as we become more addicted to social network sites we loose touch with the real world. Whilst these sites do have a component of social interaction I feel, or at least I hope that we have these conversations in an effort to make the world a better place, as opposed to what knowing what Mary did 8 minutes ago.

Perhaps seeing problems such as this topic makes us more aware of social consequences of a new technology we may develop, no merely the benefits it offers.
