Please refer to API-571 ; 4.4.6 Fuel Ash Corrosion.

4.4.6.3 Critical Factors

(e) The liquid species (slags) are different for the oil and coal ash and are also different for waterwall-tube corrosion.

Comment :-

  • Oil ash refers to fuel oil fired heater.
  • Coal ash refers to coal fired heater.

The question is,

  • to cause waterwall-tube corrosion, which fuel is being used to fire the heater thereof ?

Either of them. The products of combustion are the same, though in different proportions.
