11/11/2010 1:02 AM

Is it possible to have welding in the GI pipe since the pipe wall thickness is less?.If it is possible, Which type of welding and welding rod can be preferred for this welding.

There are some problems with this. Welding on GI pipe will give off toxic zinc fumes, but drinking milk helps to counteract that. The welding will burn off the zinc on the inside of the pipe; if it carries water, it will rust on the inside.

If the pipe is an ammonia refrigeration coil, it will be galvanized on the outside only. The zinc can be ground off next to the weld, which may then be done by oxyacetylene or SMAW welding (E6010 root pass, E6010 or E7018 for subsequent passes). Afterwards, the joint may be painted with cold galvanizing compound.
