Generator Voltage Instability Shutdown

Wondering if anyone can provide insight as to what to seek... Diesel genset with mecce alte generator shuts down after 3 hours with voltage instability alarm. Stability/voltage pots have been checked. Winding resistance ok. AVR seems ok, though have not tried a replacement. Any ideas?

Check for series connection in the circuit.Good luck.
