A new pump technology captures energy from ocean surges. When joined with hydroelectric systems, "SEADOG" ocean-wave pumps can produce clean, renewable energy; combined with desalination systems, they turn salt water into fresh water. Estimates suggest that a square mile of pumps could produce 50 to 1,500 MW of hydropower daily, depending on weather and sea conditions. During recent testing in the Gulf of Mexico, one unit pumped 15,000 to 40,000 gal of seawater per day.
