Operating Pressure & PN Selection

11/14/2010 1:20 PM

Could some one advise what PN rated valves and fittings such as strainers, DRV & elbows fittings to be selected for a chilled water HVAC sysstem circulating at 12 BAR operating pressure? Is it advisable to hydro test a system with PN 16 rated fittings at 18 Bar? Or a PN 25 valves and fittings should be selected for an operating pressure of 12 BAR?

Why such a high pressure in the first place?

You have clubbed two questions in to one- Selection and Hydro testing.

Selection:

Yes you can select PN16 fittings for operating pressure of 12 bar chilled water application.

Hydro testing:

Yes you can hydro test the piping system at 18 bar. Here, please check what is the design pressure of the piping system (normaly 1.2 times of operating pessure)? As per ASME B31.3 hydro test pressure shall not be less than 1.5 times the design pressure.
