Fiber Optic Cable in HDPE Pipe - Need Help

11/15/2010 8:49 AM

Dear all,

I've got one project of laying Fiber optic cable 4 core (armored) in HDPE pipe of 110 mm dia. I need to lay/pull at least 7 fiber optic cables in one HDPE pipe/duct of 110 mm. total 65 kms of cable to be pulled. HDPE pipe will be in excavated trench. Length of one HDPE pipe is 50 meter. Also at every 200 meter there is either cable chamber/pit or road crossing consist of GI pipe of 110 mm. I need to pull this very very soft cable with out damaging it. Kindly direct me to proper method for the same.

Thanks & Regards,

Fibro Optico

Instead of 110mm GI pipe being coupled to the HDPE pipe, consider using larger GI pipe at the road crossings as a sleeve, with the HDPE pipe running continuously through it.

Armored fiber optics is not as delicate as it seems to be. as long as you wont exceed the bending angle more than lets say 60 degrees than you should be fine. if the fiber you have is already terminated than you should watch for the connectors so they wont get damaged but even if they will you can have a technician to re-terminate them. so using regular drag-line or snake should be a good solution.

i am telecommunication technician for past 3 years and we usually pull fiber optics in very rough conditions and it was always fine.

For electrical wiring there is "pulling soap" to lubricate the wires. I don't know if FO cable would have a problem with this goop on it.

Yes, you do have to be careful.

Your FO cable supplier can provide you with the written cable spec for your particular cable which will show the maximum pulling force and pulling radius.

If you have the cable manufacturer name and the cable part number, try to enter that in Google followed by the word "Specification".

Example: "Belden M9B039 003X Specification"

You can also Google "how to pull FO Cable in conduit" for more info.

Research before you pull and you will save yourself time and money.

If pulling a bundle of cables, you can use one or more "cable pulling grips". They are made for pulling at the end or for intermediate additional grips along the cable bundle. You could throw in a few spares in case of individual cable breakage.

being honest with you i don't have much of a theoretical knowledge but i have pretty good field experience.

in practice this job is much easier to be done than in theory. if the pipes are straight than there is no worries that you will have problems with completing the task. just use vacuum to pull the drag-line through and re-pull the fiber.there is no way the fiber will get damaged in these conditions. it could get damaged if bent too much or the wire is "pinched" which will cause damage of the protection and loss of the light. if you could add more specifications of the cable and how its armored than we would be clear if there is a risk of a damage.

if the pipes have multiple curves than on the distance of 200 meter you could get stuck and you should reconsider adding more pull-boxes.

please add more specifications from the manufacturer.
