Hydro Power Generation from Motor Pumps

Hi,

I am very very new to the field of electrical energy and assume that my knowledge here is 1/100..

In my house, I have a well where we bring the water up with 7.5hp motor. When the water is lifted up, it comes up with very good force. The idea that I thought was to use this force to run the turbine and generate electricity from it. Some questions...

a) What could be the average amount of electricity that I can extract out of this system? Could I use the same to run the same 7.5HP motor?

b) Is there already a proven system that I can implement? If so, can you point me to some good resource?

c) When I say a device consumes 100Watt electricity, is it 100 watts/second? Or how do we actually say a device consumes 100 watt of electricity?

Any energy that you extracted from the top of the well would simply increase the energy consumption of the pump down the well. So, no, it will not work.

It is normal to say a device consumes 100 watts or 1000 watts. No it is not watts per second. Just watts. That is the instantaneous power consumption. If you run the thing for an hour and it is running at 1000 watts, then you have consumed 1 kilowatt hour of electrical energy. That is the units that are used by the electicity supplier to charge you for your consumption. 1 unit = 1 kilowatt-hour.

morrie's right, all you'd be doing is using your pump to drive a generator. It would be a net power loss. But, look at all the time you saved yourself by posting.

This won't work on your scale, but you may be interested in the concept:

Diagram of the TVA pumped storage facility at Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Plant.

This system uses cheap power to pump water back into a reservoir when demand is low and then that water used to generate power again the next day during peak useage times.

Hello Guest,

Water exating at well head can easily be converted to electricity by hydro turbine.

The formula for wattage produced by a 80% efficient turbine is. 1 litre flow per second at 9 bar pressure produces 720 watts. Increasing by flow rate and or bar pressure.
