Clarification on Electrical Generator Parameters

11/17/2010 8:13 PM

I've been looking at some generator parameters and I just want some clarification on what the following parameters represent:

a) Quadrature and direct axis reactance? I did a whole heap of googling on this, nothing made sense to me. Maybe someone can point me to a website/article etc. which explains this clearly?

b) Another query I have is about zero, positive and negative sequence impedances. I know about symmetrical components in regards to electrical faults, zero impedance = no angle between phasors, positive/negative sequence rotation of phasors a-b-c a-c-b etc.

Why are these measured impedances different on a generator? Is it due to varying currents and heating effects causing inductance and resistances of the windings to change under the various fault conditions?

c) I'm currently using SKM powertools to model an electrical system and for the generator, it asks for a paramater called If which alters the generators damage curve. Can someone tell me what If represents on a generator?

Thanks

Intermediate frequency?

My guess is that it may really be If, with I being current and the subscript f being fault.

Polerz - The quadrature and direct axis reactance are connected to armature reaction. Please refer "The performance and design of alternating current machines by M G Say". The complete details are given. Please refer the same book for zero, positive and negative sequence impedances. Can you give me details of the SKM power tools and its applications Thanks

Thanks for your response. I actually found what If is in the manual for SKM: lf Field current at given load. Actual pre-fault amperes at the initial loading conditions (that is, no load or full load). Normally 1 to 3*Ifg lfg Field current at no load rated volts. Normally 1 pu. What are they referring to when they talk about field current? Excitation field current? Generator output current at no load?

If refers to field current. No load If is normally around 0.6 full load If. As far as my knowledge goes, there is no such thing as pre-fault amperes. Plot the generator operating chart and see where you stand

Why haven't you asked the manufacturer of the generator?
