Flute making / Fipple tube / Nickel Silver Tubing

11/19/2010 9:02 AM

I am in the process of making the nickel silver tube for the fipple part of the flute.

I am looking for a source for: - Nickel Silver Tubing with an OD = 0.700 and ID = 0.600

I am a whistle/ flute maker : http://www.theflutemaker.com

I have looked on line for this tube - It's an odd size... I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Many Thanks,

-Ty

I'm probably missing something. But it looks like lots of places make custom tubing.

Here's one:

I don't know if this is what you are after but: Nickel silver, also known as German silver, paktong, new silver or alpacca (or alpaca), is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.[1] In fact, all modern, commercially important nickel silvers (such as those standardized under ASTM B122) contain significant amounts of zinc, and are sometimes considered a subset of brass.[2] Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but contains no elemental silver unless plated..... I found this from http://www.h-htube.com/brasscopper.html and then doing a search on google...

16 gauge is 0.051 thick so that is the closest to your posted requirements. You may need to get flat stock rolled and soldered into a tube, and then cut to shape.

Here is one source for 16gauge flat stock in nickel or german silver. 16gauge is an uncommon size for jewelry metal.

https://eclient.ijsinc.com/eshop/default.aspx?ControlName=ItemDisplay&item_id=58d370a8-8640-4cd0-8b8b-9f731ffb18fc&category_id=67456DE9-C3D5-4711-8E7A-0EC8AA82B7D9

This is about $65US per 6inch by 36 inch sheet.

I suggest you try 20 gauge. It's .032 thick and quite strong for your usage. It's also 2/3 the price and a common size.

Thanks for the information.... If you look at "How My Flutes Are Made" at: http://www.theflutemaker.com/

I do use flat stock rolled and soldered into a tube. This is very time consuming and I am trying to find a source for tubing that is made.

I think 20 gauge tubing would OK if the ID = 0.600

Many Thanks,
-Ty
