Wow! Ice Blue Luminescent Meteor

11/19/2010 3:51 AM

I can't believe what I just saw - less than 15 minutes ago I saw an ice blue luminescent meteor against a clear blue sky flying low over Tunbridge Wells and within a couple of seconds or so of me seeing it, it burnt out as it was losing height.

It appeared to be really low in the sky, lower than the jets that fly over here, but that could be deceptive so I can't say for sure how low it was, but if it was as low as it seemed when it burnt out then it must have landed pretty close to Tunbridge Wells or slightly to the east as it was flying in a more or less easterly direction but it was losing height quite quickly.

The color and intensity of the luminescence was the most striking thing, Against a bright blue sky it was extremely clear and easily visible with the naked eye as a bright ice blue.

I've seen meteors at night but they never looked bright ice blue in color and I never expected to see one in broad daylight, it was incredibly beautiful.

I just rang the Courier (newspaper) to ask if they had any other reports but they're not open yet.

The time of sighting must have been about 10 past eight this morning UK time friday 19 november.

There are a lot of jets that fly low over here on their approach to London Gatwick and someone on one of those must have seen it too.

Thanks guys, I just had to record it somewhere.

Could it be your sighting is coincident with the Leonid meteor shower?

I was thinking the same thing -- Guest may have seen a Leonid meteor. For guest's location and time, Leo would be high in the sky and somewhat west of the meridian. Assuming a mostly clear blue sky (from guest's description), light from the blue sky scattering off the meteor's trail would give it a bluish color. The presence of some material in the meteor (copper, maybe?) could give it a bluish color also.

Yes, I agree with you both, it probably was attributed to the Leonid meteor shower.

The peak was Wednesday/Thursday, but you still catch some nice ones a few days before/after the peak.

WOW – a bright blue one - in daylight no less! Sweet!

I was up at 3AM working outside yesterday (Thursday) and saw a few really nice ones, unfortunately, no blue ones though.

One was so bright (white/orange) that it lit up the ground, (I live in the boonies so there is no background light pollution) I looked up just in time to see it arc about 60 degrees across the sky.

It was an arrow, covered in blue luminescent paint.

Nah... it was a hunk of blue cheese knocked off of the moon by an experiment conducted by the same folk who ran that missle test off of the coast of the US recently.

I do, however, envy you your sighting, it must have been something. Why oh why do we not have a camera with us at such times?

Ice blue, flying low in the sky you say? Perhaps an airplane jettisoned it's lavatory tanks before landing?! Did you notice little yellow flecks that looked curiously like corn in that "meteor" by any chance?
