What is the meaning of the black arrow in the small box on the lower left corner of a desktop icon?

Yup, that is correct - the little arrow on a desktop icon means it "points" to the actual location of the file. If you right click on the icon and look at properties it will show where the link is to the actual file.

This is very handy for the desktop to link to large files so that memory is not taken up with the storage of the file on your desktop profile.
