How Close Two Weldlines Can Be?

11/22/2010 4:00 AM

Hi all I am engaged in construction of heat exchangers (shell and tube) during shell fabrication and assembling external parts we found that the wledlines of this part will overlap the shell weld-lines...or at least it will become too close to it. i couldn't find any clear phrase in ASME Sec. VIII or TEMA. i would be wondered if any one could give me some scientific/ technical hint or statndard act. tnx in advance

Typical for pressure vessels is 50mm, eg from shell weld to a nozzle weld.

In practice, usually 50mm is a good length but also need to consider if the thickness of the plate is large, for example if the plate is 30mm thk, good practice will require three times the plate thickness or 2 inch (whichever is greater), so 90mm is the distance between weld line.

hope this clarify...have a nice day
