  1. Break out the individual words from the abbreviation.
  2. What do they actually mean?

Hi there,

I have never heard of ICSS so I will not even attempt that.

DCS - Distributed/De-Centralised Control System

ESD - Emergency Shutdown Device

A DCS is used for the control and monitoring of the process. In other words, it has good math processing capabilities and the scan cycles are not usually that fast as it is not normally needed.

An ESD is used to shut the process down to a safe state in the case of failures etc. In other words, not used for control, but used to monitor and process logic states.

In practice both are used in conjunction.
