Morphy Richards Steam Iron - Tamper Proof Screws

11/24/2010 2:34 PM

My daughter's Morphy Richards Steam Iron has stopped working. Fuse is fine, so I suspect power supply cable has broken at point it enters Iron. Frequent flexing often causes cable breaks in my experience. Problem is I cannot remove the scews holding coverplate. Then are like a slotted head screw, but with a solid area in the middle.Anyone know where I might get a tool to remove them. I am in the UK.

There is a good chance that the local hardware store may have screwdriver bit kits that will have the one you need. The manufacturers of security screws and the manufacturers of screwdriver bits are engaged in a perpetual game of leapfrog, and the screw you describe is old enough now for bits to be available.

Not certain just what you mean by "...slotted head screw, but with a solid area in the middle." Have a look at this Wiki article with a list of most of the types, with illustrations. After you identify the fastener, a driver (in your case, an undriver) can be found.

I am not familiar with the iron in question. I Googled "Morphy Richards Steam Iron Image" but could not come up with an angle that showed the size of the screws.

Based on your description can you use a tool like this or similar to this:

Or can the screw heads be grasped with a small pair of needle nose vise grips like these:

Good luck with the repair!

I think I know the type of screw you're talking about, but I don't think you'll find a head that fits them. They don't want you to take it apart, they want you to buy a new iron.

These screws are probably buried in holes in the iron body. You may be able to drill out the solid part in the center and use a small screw/bolt extractor to get them out, then replace with standard screws when it's fixed.

Drill them out.

The Wikipedia article didn't show the right one, but most of these tamper-resistant screws have specialty driver bits that match. You may be able to grind a gap in the center of a regular slotted-head screwdriver, which might or might not be hardened enough for the remaining "fork" to loosen the screws.

Get an ordinary screwdriver and file or grind a slot in the centre of the blade to go over the solid portion.
You may need to find one which doesn't have a very hard blade.
I've done it to modify a cheap car battery charger into a gel battery charger.

Harbor Freight sells a little kit for about $3 that has every security bit known to man. You can even steal the dividers between public urinals (Just why do they think those need security screws?). They put those screws in appliances in order to meet approval agency requirements. So they say. Of course, it really means most people throw away any broken appliance rather than open it up and repair it. That way they sell more.

My guess is that OP is in the UK* and thus doesn't have a 'Harbor Freight'.

What? You have no Harbor Freight? The land that gave us the Magna Charta, Shakespeare, John Locke, and Helen Mirren has no Harbor Freight? Are you reduced to watching American TV shows and cheering for Madrid in the World Cup? Oh, sad day!

Sorry, Kramarat your post wasn't here when I sent #5. Use a drill bit that is a little smaller then the size of screw head. As your drilling at some point you will feel a change in speed of drill, that the head of the screw spinning on the shaft.

We had the same problem. My husband just successfully used a flathead screwdriver as a chisel, hammering the end of the screw driver, and boosted up the aforementioned tamper-proof screws. Good luck.
