Electrical & General Consulting Firm

11/24/2010 8:25 PM

I just got an offer for a entry graduate electrical position with a respectful engineering firm in northern Ontario. This is a consulting firm which now has over 4000 employees throughout all its offices. The offer is coming in a few days.

Do you think they have a union?

What can I expect at a salary, I stated 60k$ is what i would like to start at.

I'll be as nice as I can.

Given your level of experience, I'd grovel at the feet of the hiring manager and take the job.

First, you will need to prove that you are capable of performing the tasks they give you. Then you may get some rewards. All your questions indicate that you want to start out at the top and be the boss. It doesn't work that way.

If you are competent, and do your job, the rewards will come. First, you have to get the job.

You're welcome. Sorry, but all your questions seemed to be incredibly self serving. Good luck, you'll need it.

You are going to get the job offer - congratulations!!

Consulting companies hardly have union.

If the company matches what have you asked is not bad for the entry position. Hope your offer will come up with a good number that will keep you happy with the company.

Consulting companies generally charge your time against client. If the clients approve over time and pays for it, it is generally employee's desecration to do the over time. This is your entry position job, so try to be flexible for the project work. In some cases, companies give you extra time off. But this depends on the company policy and it varies company to company. Many consulting companies have the policy of more flexible working 40 hours per week – you can make it in 4 (4 x 10 hours) days or 4½ day (9 x 4 + 4 hours) within the week.

In most of the companies, the vacation day for entry position is 2 weeks, but again it may vary; if you are lucky, can get 3 weeks.

If you need the job and you don't have any option, I would suggest you to accept it and gain more experience, regardless of all the concerns that you are having now.

Wish you good luck for your new career.

- MS

Thank you much sir, I am just curious. I have never worked for an engineeering firm other then some consulting a few years ago and onsite verification. So I was just wanted to hear some ideas from the more expserienced engineers. Thank you for your time . And yes I have the offer, just waiting for HR to do their thing.

I am very excited for this position. :)

Happy Thursday!

Hmm, I can only proffer my experience based on my "local" situation.

Now you've been given and offer is that to start or to have an interview?

If it is to start the "offer" would have all the conditions of employment, the "employment contract" as such in the offer. This would have all the detail as to your future employment. if it is an offer for an interview, then you still have to sell yourself for the position..

Being a graduate engineering position, you probably classified as office staff so no, no Union membership required.

Your starting price is probably too steep, you will be offered a package based on the companies budget and the relevant local employment market salaries.

The best way to acheive within a company is to value ad, that is to do rather than pay lip service as to how good you are. As for overtime when you're young, it is what buys that extra case of beers at the end of the week, when your older it's what is making the payments on your house. Overtime is always a good thing as long as your paid for it. If you are on wages, you will be payed as per the scale. If you are on Salary, usually but not always it is redeemed in kind but not cash. That is you can get extra days off to compensate for the extra time worked. There are those companies that will pay you Wage scale overtime on top of your base salary. You will need to get that clarified at your interview.

In Oz the norm is to have 4 weeks annual leave available after 12 months full time permanaent employment it's different in different countries. Invarioubly you annual leave is a priveledge not a right as such, you can only take paid annual leave at the approval of the company. That is universal..

As for your taxes, everybody except drug dealers pays taxes...

A starting salary of $60K for a freshly minted BS Engineer would be EXCELLENT in my area where cost of living and home ownership is quite low. Even with the economy recovering (somewhat), the job market is still pretty slim. If you get any offer give it CAREFUL consideration. Unless you can spend the next year or two looking for another offer, be open to negotiating the salary and the benefits (relocation, vacation, holidays, medical, 401k matching, etc.). Good luck!
