Carbon Steel for Low Temp

11/24/2010 11:52 PM

I have chilled brine service with design temperature of -27deg C. As per standard, ASTM A 106 can be used upto -28C. But a few suppliers are insisting on using A333 (LTCS) material which would be about 25% costlier that A106. Which is the optimum choice out of these options:- a) ASTM A106 b) ASTM A106 with impact testing c) A333

Please guide..

If the standard says -28°C (-18.4°F), then 106-B should be acceptable regardless of what the supplier says.

As I recall, the ASME low-temp cutoff is at -20°F (~-28.9°C). However, US Coast Guard applications have (or had) a 0°F (~-17.8°C) cutoff. So it depends on what code has jurisdiction in the installation's location.

Is the applicable code the real issue here? if -27 degrees is the operating temp and the spec limit is -28 degrees, That one degree of "temperature margin" seems to me to be A) not very much margin and B) less than probable temperature measurement error.
