UPS Slender 600 - Battery Overcharged?

11/25/2010 8:35 AM

I have a UPS(15minutes backup) for my PC.Unfortunately it failed its very purpose of backup supply. The technician told it was over charged so switch off when its not used. I could not understand his concept. How can a battery be overcharged?

The technician is very good at coming up with nonsense replies to his customers (you). All UPS systems have chargers in them that will fast charge the battery when it is low and apply a float charge to the battery to keep it fully charged once the battery has reached that point.

Turning the unit off is not the answer, in fact, it is a ridiculous comment for him to have made. Go back and see him. If he does not address your concerns, see his boss.

i had a problem too. In my case, the home has a general purpose UPS on which the computer's UPS was also connected. Whenever power went off, the home inverter would shift to its battery, and the computer UPS would flicker momentarily, causing the computer to reboot. So, i ran a separate line from the mains (not on the home UPS circuit) and it works fine now.

i don't know what is the mode of failure you are experiencing. Just in case it is similar to my problem....

Ok srider the home inverter output is not pure sinosoidal so the system UPS,phone chargers, battery chargers etc. face problem. I didnt mentioned a case here.Due to voltage fluctuation i connected 300VA TV stabilizer(V guard) in series with 600VA,0.6PF UPS was that created the problem. Now i connected separatly.

In general UPS systems and the like don't get along with each other. Due to one being sinusoidal and another not, conflicts arise. They don't even like surge supressors, and vice versa. Each wants it's own line from the mains to the appliance, no sharing.

I have lots of different UPS units in my house, but they are not connected to each other. At most, I use a power strip after my APC unit so I can plug in a lot of stuff.

Keep in mind, power strips are only good for a couple of bad surges, don't use old ones. They will still deliver power, but no protection.

As far as overcharging the battery, either the UPS or it's battery is defective, or you are getting a lot of baloney. Try a new battery, they only last so long, a few years.

The technician just gave you a silly answer.

There could be two possible reasons. (1) Battery charger section of the UPS has failed, and is generating voltage higher or lower than what is required for charging the battery. High charging voltage will damage the battery while Low charging voltage will not charge battery.

(2) Battery itself has failed, this could happen due to charger generating higher voltage. To rule out this possibility, FIRST remove battery & check voltage at battery connector terminals of UPS by a multimeter in DC voltage range. If this is HIGH then charger section of UPS has failed & POSSIBILY battery has also got damaged. If this is LOW then also charger section of UPS has failed but battery might still be OK. Replace existing battery with a NEW FULLY CHARGED battery & check if it provides back up.

Thanks and regards

If its true what he says, the unit either has a failure or the quality is abysmal.....

Continuously overcharged batteries fail quickly.....

Most small UPSs have batteries that fail after a couple of years under normal conditions. How old were yours?
