Lynlynch is essentially correct. In terms of color/wavelength/frequency fiber optic cable is analog; there is an infinite number of wavelengths throughout the visible and near-infrared that could be transmitted.

How many colors/wavelengths/frequencies would actually be useful to you depends on your coder/decoder equipment at the ends of the fiber.
