Dear Sir,

I just want to know if there is any equipment used to determine the

concentration of Aluminium Oxide in Aluminium Sulphate

Hi Yvonne,

I can't see any way in which you would be able to easily determine the concentration directly. But what about trying a two step reaction where the sulphates are first precipitated and removed from the solution after which a cation analysis on the aluminium can be done. This should give you a total aluminium concentration which you can rework to Al2O3 concentration by using the sulphate concentration you calculated in the first step.

I'm not a chemist so I have no idea whether this will work but if you're struggling it might just be worth a try.

Also, procedures for both these analyses should be easy to find in almost any analytical chemistry textbook. (I have Vogel's Textbook of quantitative inorganic analysis.

Good luck

Rgds

Aluminium Sulphate dissolves in water--upto 870g/litre.

Aluminium Oxide DOES NOT dissolve in water at all.

All you need is gravimetric analysis

Enjoy
