In search of material for vibro-trough

Hello everybody,

I have registered / joined CR4 and want to take part in discussion / problems solving, etc. I am mechanical engineer by profession and is presently working as Assoc. Gen. Manager with one of the non-ferrous manufacturing leading organization in the world.

We have vibro-feeder installed in Sinter Plant through which required hot sinter is fed in the spike roll crusher for further process. Following are the details

  • Temperature of sinter is in the range of 800 to 1000°C.
  • Trough receives hot sinter continuously through a stone box from a height of 1m.
  • Troughs are in 3 parts which are assembled in overlapping condition.

Problem: Trough gets distorted, crack gets developed, plate gets buckled within 2 to 3 months due to continuous exposed to heat & thermal shocks.

We have used troughs with following material of construction (MOC) but never received life more than 2 to 3 months resulting in downtime of plant.

  1. DIN 13CrMo44
  2. ASTM A3 87 M 92 Gr.12, Class 2
  3. SS 310
  4. SS 310S

I am looking forward for a suitable MOC of trough which can withstand thermal shocks and at least give a life of two years without any problem with above working condition.

I take it you're not willing to change geometry (like reinforce the plates with ribs)?

Have you considered aluminum as MOC? It has better heat-conduction than steel, this should lead to a more even temperature of the whole through and thus minimize thermo-shock.

Reducing the fall-height of 1m might also reduce mechanical wear and tear to the trough.

Ribbed TIGwelded ---SS304 ---may be double skin--with 1"refractory powder in between is your best bet.

Hoping for 2-year life before preventive maintenance - not worth it.

Many years back I worked in the Raw Materials Engineering division of a major steel manufacturer. I seem to remember that we used refractory lined chutes for this type of situation; of course, liner wear is an issue and patching or re-bricking would be necessary on a routine basis.

Dear Sir,

distortion, cracking and bucling is all caused by rapid heating and quenching.

So there are some possible solutions to your problem:

make the temperature gradients (both with time and with direction) small,

or, prevent the temperature from reaching the metallic part of the truogh,

that is: get some liner either ceramic or metallic that can do this isolation without being overstressed.

As I am consulting on difficult problems like yours and as I have vast experience how temperature gradients induce errors and failures, I am convinced I can show you how to solve the problem.

So if you want to have a long term lasting construction don't hesitate to contact me and send some data about the shape adimensions of your troughs.
