For above ground HSD tanks bitumen paint has excellent corrosion resistance properties but it's use is very limited due to it's everlasting odor also keep in mind that any other paint (color) on top of bitumen coat does not holds.

I have seen HSD storage tanks in large power stations to be coated with base coats of red oxide primer and final coats of outdoor type oil paint in Camouflage Background scheme (Camouflage coloring changes from county to country).

Good place to research coatings. Don't know if they are near you, but their industrial line is good too.

I've had good luck with their Polane T products and my house is painted with their 100% acrylic paint.

All the paint I buy for work (about 100 gallons a year, not that much I know) is SW paint.

I'm sure there are other brands that are as good.

Sure, there are many good products out there. SW site is a good place to research what type of material will give the most bang for the buck. And they've got an international presence, someone in India or wherever, would most likely be able to find a supplier.

Tnemec has some of the very best paint coating systems available. Try doing a Google search for their website or contact their Tech Support, one of the best in the industry worldwide.

Good luck with your project.

Hi Rama,

Before any decision, don't forget to check the level of average humidity, pH, and salt level of your soil around the future tank location. When you have all those informations, get in contact with one of major industrial paint manufacturer and ask for 2-pack epoxy coating system for the protection of your tank, not important what's in it! Check the environment of the tank and decide after. Good luck for your painting project, Gil.

Hi Lover,

My suggestion was to check the future conditions and environment of the tank, and paint it after. Also, I know you can get all kinds of epoxy coatings but after my recommendation, I proposed to see a local industrial epoxy coating manufacturer. You have good ones! Please, just to tell me that I was wrong! Why you don't suggest something goes to help. Again, critics and attacks on others are easy but better to tell people what to do and do well, is hard or non-existant.

Why people are so argument creators? We should give solutions!

Talking epoxies: You suggest a polyamide, blend of amines, adducted amines or combination of all for the hardener of 100% solid or solventless coating or you want to see a solvent based coating to protect the tank? There are solutions! Let me know what's the best or you have another, Gil.

Hi Lover,

It's me again! Now, I would like to test your "savoir-faire", not your knowledge about epoxies.

Tell us what type of amine will you recommand for the underground tank? Also, don't forget the total thickness of the coating system, abrasion and chemical resistance, and we need to add some special pigment or additive to be the best for our customer because she/he will pays for it.

Take your time and consult books and talk to Shell, Dow and other epoxy manufacturers to get the best answer for you.

Wish you good time and wait for the optimum solution from the man who knows epoxies, Gil.

Dear gest,

weheen we are suggesting some webs or recommending some epoxies , it i dosent mean we are attacking others , all i wanted to say that the given web site are having thier own R &D.

if any one send them the actual problem , they will come back with right material, as i said there are 100 tyeps of epoxies and manufactured every where, our friend who is having tank problem if he knew the right material , he could not come to the engineering place for finding a solution.

a gain my recommendation is go to the right DR. even if you pay lettel more.

our nature is so clean , we shall keep it as it is 4ever

Hi Lover,

To paint follow the step-by-step procedure:

1. Check the future environment of the (will be) painted object.

2. Know the surface preparation of the object.

3. Choose the best quality paint for the object according to 1 and 2.

4. Apply paint following recommendations.

Good job and long life for the object, Gil.

An excellent finish usually available almost worldwide is Amerlock 400 High-Solids Epoxy on top of Amercoat 385 PA Rust Inhibitor Epoxy Primer. http://www.ameroncoatings.com/

The best paint you can find and obtain is what you want. Repainting in a tank farm is a difficult task.

Don't listen to purchasing and go cheap!

To pait a diesel tank above ground level, you can use hempadure or hempatain paint. It a very good protective paint.

PPG two part industrial urethane. Much less expensive than Awlgrip and is spot repaintable.

Good idea - go cheap and spend a fortune in making a safe atmosphere for cleaning and repainting earlier than required!

PPG is less expensive, not cheap. Researched and created to be a bit less toxic and lasts longer for my application in the marine (salt water) environment over metal and fiberglass. Can be repaired without massive removal of primer(s) and top paint, as others must, which does cause significant pollution. In the last 20 years I have used some very exotic fluids, paints and treatments, all have been exceptional, the PPG just seems to have it all (the best trade offs) in this environment.

It does rather depend on the material to be painted, which has been withheld.
