Waterless Heat Exchanger Fins

11/29/2010 5:14 PM

Help.

I ran across an air heat exchanger at a trade shown 10 years ago that didn't use water to conduct heat out of the air stream, but used a proprietary design to funnel heat out of the coil, then brought it to another surface. In the instance that I saw, it was used for "run around", taking heat out at the preheat coil and placing it back into the reheat coil.

I can't remember the name or the generic classification of this type of device.

Anyone?

I wonder if this could have been a "heat pipe" (or a bank of them). Some kind of thermosiphon arrangement might also work.

Yes...it was Heat Pipe Technology Inc. Thank you.

Was it something like this www.advancedheatrecovery.com? These are available with fins, but usually are supplied without fins to reduce fouling. Compared to any other type of heat exchanger, they have been called "bullet-proof" since they are a thick-wall technology, work isothermically, auto-compensate if one or more should fail, are simple structures not prone to stress cracking, and cross-contamination is nearly impossible.

What you are describing sounds like a plate air to air heat exchanger. There is no chance of cross contamination because the two air streams are separated from each other. Take a look at this web site.

Heat pipes will also do the job but have a tendency to get plugged up.
