Man Bricks Himself In, Then Drills His Way Out

11/29/2010 8:44 PM

This came across my email browser yesterday ; http://www.thelocal.de/society/20101125-31413.html

Just how could a rational person 'brick' himself in, with no way out, unless he was trying to escape the nags from the wifey, or is he playing some publicity 'stunt' in order to get his 15 minutes of fame?

I've heard the old stories of painting oneself into a corner, but this one is, how you say, over the top!

Can, or does this REALLY happen to certain people, preoccupied with a single, or tunnel vision in order that the job at hand is completed, no matter what the outcome may be? It just boggles my headset to think that someone could actually DO this, without being somewhat aware of the surroundings.

Maybe he feels guilty of some long past indiscretions, and subconscious justice of placing himself in a jail of his own making, but I really doubt it.

He is either a TOTAL idiot, or is just out for the publicity that it may bring.

For what it's worth (maybe a good chuckle,at least); Any thoughts?

Or is this just another mediocre news item to keep our thoughts off concentration of the important issues on hand

It says in the artical that he had not been getting on with the people next door. I wonder if this is his way of being passive aggresive? "oh..I bricked myself in so now I am coming in via your wall...so sorry (and stuff you) my nice next door people" david

Unfortunately I have had experience working around people who are both highly motivated yet hopelessly clueless to what is around them so yes I would say its entirely possible he could have done this without thinking about it being I have seen others do things just as dumb and worse with no ill will intended towards anyone.

I just read it again. You see if he wanted to anoy the nexts door people he did quite well. He took his food and drink down with him and sealed himself in (and after all why block off a cellar area?) then he waits for the cement to dry. At this point he can drill into the folk next door and the police cant come and stop him because he has bricked them out of coming into his cellar. The artical says he "went downstairs armed with bricks, mortar as well as food and drink." The word "armed" makes me wonder if the journalist really suspects there was a "war" going on. Its sometimes fun trying to work peoples behaviour out.. .I ought to shine this critical torch on myself a bit more. david

"...he waits for the cement (mortar) to dry..."

Exactly. Mortar doesn't dry that fast. If this had been a true mistake, he could have taken down part of the wall before the mortar had set, climbed over the partial wall, then re-assembled the wall once he was on the other side.

Completely bogus. He did this just to annoy his neighbors. The guy is a mental case.

I was pondering on that last night as well. What experience I have had with concrete or brick and mortar is it take a fair amount of time to set up.

Also where there no windows in the basement?

It does seem rather suspicious the more I think about it.

I with you on that one, the Guy is simply mental......like a lot of neighbours are here in Germany.....

I found this on a website,:-

Perhaps he did have a 'discussion' with his naggy wifey and was only seeking some refuge. Beer and chips works in the short term. - Hope he had some air and a pot to pi$$ in - Loupy

Seems a little far fetched......although I've done some stupid things, just not thinking.

I once changed out the master brake cylinder and booster in my truck. I bench bled the master cylinder and got everything put back together just right. Being excited to try out my new braking ability, I jumped in the truck and backed it straight into a ditch................forgot to bleed the brakes.

Cost me $75 to get a tow truck to come pull me out.

I know there are others, but I try to forget them.

clearly publicity stunt!

What person would create a wall that robs them of their own space, with no entry from his side of the building? Surely if the wall was a drink cellar or such he would need his own access and the plans would have had such provision.

As an amateur bricklayer myself (Wood fired pizza oven and some garden beds) he could not have erected a sufficient wall in the timeframe without the "call of nature", unless totaly pre-meditated he could not have built external corners from inside the "bunker" etc. etc..
