Penetrating Oil

12/02/2010 7:14 PM

In the April/May, 2007, issue of Machinist's Workshop there was an article by Lloyd Bender comparing different penetrating oils. (Better called penetrants, in my opinion, since not all are oils.) Even this original article messed up by listing the best penetrant as a 50/50 mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone. However, it was really power steering fluid and acetone.

Does anyone know if Machinist's Workshop ever printed a correction? If so, is it possible to get a copy or find out what issue it was in?

Thanks.

Power steering fluid and transmission fluid are the same thing. Most cars on the road today use the same fluids in both the automatic transmission and the power steering system. Newer vehicles have now demanded better seal protection additives for the power steering systems along with better heat dissipation qualities.

When it comes to mixing home brew rust penetration solutions it would make no difference, for all are hydraulic fluids. So, no correction is really needed.

'Cause it keeps coming back--without the correction. It just this month showed up in a newsletter I get.
