What's the Best Adhesive?

12/02/2010 10:41 PM

I want to afix a glass tube in a hole (~equal diameter - 1/4") drilled into the bottom of a nylon measuring cylinder. The latter will alternately be filled with diesel, coconut oil and mixtures of the two in varying proportions. Obviously I would want a firm, robust and permanently sealed join. Can anyone recommend an adhesive/sealant that would do the job?

Nylon will yield a little. How about a slightly undersized hole, press fit the glass tube into it, and skip the adhesive? Just a wild idea, but you never know....

There are probably many available and suitable, depends on your durability need and how long and how often the exposure will be.

I have used the "Globalspec" search a couple of times specifically for adhesives and both times got excellent results of locally available and up to date technology.

Personally though, I'd side with the previous post if this is a one off jopb and look for a method that achieved a force fit, or else some sort of resilient bung that teh glass can fit through.

Nylon is a pig to stick to. Maybe try a pressfit and silice sealant?
Or a slow setting epoxy?

Maybe silicone caulk, like what is used for aquariums. You would probably want to scratch up the nylon surface first.

Combined with tornado's idea it should give a nice leakproof seal.

Loctite "Glass bond" (usual disclaimer)?

Never read instructions and if you can't fix it with a hammer then it must be an electrical problem.

I don't think an interference fit is very wise. The joint will retain some liquid if left unsealed.

I'd use a product such as 2 part polysulfide rubber sealant(Usual disclaimer).

Polysulfide is used to seal fuel tanks, among other things.

Many thanks to all for the helpful advice - I might check out the stuff that 'lynlynch' (much appreciated) recommends since the join will almost always be submerged in my fuel mixtures.

Cheers!

This takes me back to my school chemistry days, constructing stills from a kit. My suggestion is to start from a glass measuring cylinder, if necessary asking a glassblower to make the hole and weld the tube for you.

Bonding glass looks easy with an epoxy adhesive but diesel will penetrate and destroy the bond after a few weeks. Nylon, as suggested above is a pig.

Drill out the nylon hole and tap it with a BSP / NTP thread. Screw in a steel or brass pneumatic or hydraulic compression gland (Available in 1/4" ID). If the glass breaks it can be replaced but consider replacing the glass tube with a copper tube.

Unless it's Nylon 12 you got the wrong material for the job, because the 6's are hygroscopic

As phph said - go to a glass blower and get it made

Or go to a laboratory supply company and buy a burette

You can make Nylon hydrophylic by plasma treating it. That sould give good adhesion.

Gently heat the glass tube to just above nylon melting point & press the tube through the bottom as it melts its way through. Do this in a jig that will pass the tube perpendicular to the botton & hold it still until it all sets.

Loctite 1:1 epoxie E-40FL should be a good stuff for your application (see TDS on Henkel website). Or call MasterBond's application engineer, sometime the have right adhesive too.
