Single acting Hydraulic Cylinder with adjustable stroke

03/23/2007 12:20 AM

I want to know the design for single acting hydraulic cylinder with adjustable stroke length without using electronic controls.

Details : In revert position - piston rod should be variable.

Stroke length range from 100 mm ~ 200 mm

Piston rod range from Dia 35 mm ~ 120 mm

Kindly give me suggestion for this design.

If any website details catlogue products...available....kindly let me know the details.......

"If any website details catlogue products...available..."

Go to <dogpile.com> enter "hydraulic cylinders" & hit enter or click on search.

As a variation include one specific feature such as 'single acting'

You should find a wide variety of cylinders and manufacurers.

How often will you adjust the stroke?

What is your operating pressure?

Duty cycle?

Speed?

Thanks for giving comments.

Operating pressure : 100 bar

Cycle time : 10 sec/stroke

Stroke adjustment of the piston should be made inside the cylinder housing and stroke operated by knob from the outside of the cylinder housing.

Which region of what country are you in? Many hydraulic retailers are very regional in nature.

What is your application?

(Typically S/A is a D/A cyl with a vented plug in one end)

Single acting is very bad in dirty, dusty or moist applications because air enters the body of the cylinder throught the shaft end air filter. This will expose your piston, shaft and main seals to whatever is in the air.

S/A cyls also require a larger reservoir than double acting. This is a very large factor if it is a big bore cylinder. Tanks are expensive.

D/A will last longer in a high duty cycle application. It runs cooler. Is alway properly cooled, lubricated and cleaned. Valving is very similar in price. Cost difference is you have to buy 2 hose rather than 1 and corresponding fittings.

Piston rod range from Dia 35 mm ~ 120 mm (1.25 - 4.5 inch Bore).

This is a very large range. We will definetely need an load range and application.

1.5" @ 3000 PSI line pressure= 5,301 LBS push.

2" @ 3000 PSI line pressure = 9,424 LBS push.

4" @ 3000 PSI line pressure = 37,699LBS push.

This is only cylinder calculations, straight push. This is the MAXIMUM. If you exceed this weight, the cylinder will not move as the releif will bypass. So make sure you build in a strong safety factor.

If it is pushing at an angle, this value drops. Dont forget friction, (resistance of any type) any added structural weight, or expected and unexpected modifications, etc.

Do not ever under size a cylinder. To save $50 there is a lot of work and re-engineering involved in making the next size up fit. ( They do not have the sample bore diameter, so the mounting tubing have to be wider)

Oh, after all of this. A cylinder will stop where ever you want it to. If you need it to hold all of these functions are based dupon you valving. Cylinders are generic (as long as they are rated for the force required). The control valves are most important part of any system, just dont forget the filter it all becomes a paper weight!

Thanks for your comments.

Iam from singapore region working as a design engineer.

What you had mentioned the details, we are already using the same.

I want to design a new concept like electrohydraulic cylinder.

All the functions are incorporated in the S/A type with adjustable stroke by using proper sealing methods for piston rings and for adjustable screw knobs. Mainly to avoid limit switch and electronic sensors....

Application : Mainly used for bending the copper and aluminium plates. Thick : 10 -12mm

Cylinder Bore : Dia 76 mm

Piston : Dia 55 mm

Stroke length : 150 mm

Cycle time : 8 - 10sec/stroke

Thanks and Regards,

Anand

Goold luck Anand,

Sounds like a great idea. I will be of no help with this I am just a hydraulics salesman.
