Anything is possible, but this one requires a whole bunch of really expensive special twist drills, heat shields, etc. Since it's so hot, why not just punch a hole?

hey , thanks for your valuable advice. Punching is not thought off as the whole idea of making a hole is to fix thermocouple in the centre of the hot forged axle just as it comes out of the press and about to enter the cooling zone. The thermocouple would record the centreline temp which we require to make the cooling curves later on. Any more idea after this ??

Talk to the Hilti people about a special nail that contains your thermocouple. A Hilti gun can shoot a nail right into a steel beam, cold. I should be able to send your thermocouple into a hot axle real easy like, maybe a low charge, so as not to damage the thermocouple.

Use your brain, emperical evidence, known values and calculate it.

Then use a representative test sample - standard "off cut" and cooling jet on end of appropriate length and measure center temperature of other end....

A thought. Just because you CAN use it, doesn't necessarily mean you ought to use it.

simulating the same conditions on a test sample is not possible as i guess the properties of material will not remain the same in a forged part and a re heated sample of small size.. on line temp. measuremets have to be done with necessity . thanks for the valuable suggestion though.
