Sheet Corner Forming

12/06/2010 12:39 AM

I head a manufacturing company, making sheet metal machinery and tools.

I would like to learn the basics of corner forming edges of sheet metal. Seems to allow variations to the radius, sheet thickness, depth of the edge, etc. Seems also avoid shearing the corners before forming.

One way to do precision bending is called "K-factor bending." For any combination of bending dies, metal alloy, and metal thickness, you make some sample bends of width W into legs L1 + L2 = W + K. You record K for further reference, eventually building up a data base of K-factors for the combinations of material and dies used in your shop.

Blank length (development) for one 90 degree bend and legs A and B

D=A+B-2*(Rb+t)+1.57*(Rb+k*t)

k-factor (neutral factor) may be estimated as

k= 0.423+0.078*Log(Rb/t)

Rb - bending radius; t - material thickness.

For steels

Rb = Max(0.16*W;Rp)

W = width of lower tool (prism); Rp - radius of upper tool (punch).
