EMD Engine Standby Quick Starting for Power Generation

12/08/2010 9:08 AM

Hello all,

I know some guru's out there have encountered this.

On an EMD engine. For automating a quickstart or immediate start scenario. How would you circumvent or incorporate the blowdown process?

Along with our mechanical division I have heard about different scenarios from keeping the engine warm to rotating the engine 360 degrees.

We have even toyed with the idea using automated valves from Kiene and camera to verify the process, etc. or exercising the engine frequently.

Anyway, what are some of the ideas you guys have or have seen implemented.

Thanks

andre

One way to do this is to have a small pump and a heat source. The pump circulates coolant through the regular engine cooling system, keeping the engine warmed up, ready to start, and capable of taking on load within a few seconds.

In many such cases of standby generating sets we have set up starting of the engine at periodic intervals, typically once in 8 hours, as if a mains failure has occoured & programmed to shut it down after running for 2 or 3 minutes. This keeps the system in a ready condition and also forewarns if some trouble is brewing.
