1994 Chevrolet S10 Blazer

12/10/2010 9:21 AM

I have a 94 Chevy Blazer. The check engine light just came on and we were driving down the road when the car acted like it was going to stall out. We had to put it in nuteral and rev the engine just so it wouldn't stall out. We have put more oil in it, antifreeze, we have had the fuel pump and the fuel tank changed recently. When we start it, the car makes a putting sound like it is missing. It does turn over but its not there. please help

It will be difficult for anyone here to give you an accurate diagnosis until you take it into a shop or dealer to have the trouble codes read.

Once you have the code(s) and provide them here, it will be easier to give you a workable solution.

Ditto on the trouble codes. May have an issue with the intake manifold gasket or Head gasket. Compression and vacuum tests will help the diagnosis. These issues are prevalent on the 3.1L and 3.4L 6cyl Chevy engines.

What engine/transmission is in your Blazer?

Why did you put more oil in? Did it read low on the dipstick? How low? You added antifreeze: How much did it take to fill it up?

Does anyone know... Do the Blazer and Cavalier use a common engine?

Yes.

The point being that the "Check Engine" is not synonymous with check fluids. Those are assumed have been checked at the last petro-stop.

"Check Engine" requires a code reader (1994 vehicles use version 1, new vehicles plug into more elaborate diagnostic tools).

Get the codes. Report back. No need to guess.

Unfortunately, many folks wait until there crankcase is empty of oil or the radiator is dry of anti-freeze and by that time it is too late! I hope that is not your situation.

Good luck!

My first car out of college was a 94 S10 blazer. I used to get the check engine light all the time. There is a sensor that sits on top of the engine. It is a little piece of crap round plastic thing that literally pulls right out by hand. It costs all of $2 and is stupid easy to replace. It will take you longer to open your hood than it will to replace it. I think it is called a MAP sensor, but don't quote me on that.

I would get the timing checked these vehicles will jump a tooth on the chain or get excessive slop in the chain.

Go to Pep Boys or one of the larger discount auto parts store, where they will use a code reader to see what the 'ck engine' lite was on for. I find it difficult to believe that you replaced the fuel tank to try to address this problem. Every time the ck engine lite comes on, you can be assured that there is a code stored in the ECM that you can access with a code reader, which will point you in the right direction for your necessary repairs.

There is a world of questions left unanswered, after putting in the oil and antifreeze did it run better is it still having the same problem ? Do you have oil in your radiator or water in your oil, did you just get fuel or were you low on fuel did you leave off the fuel cap or not tighten it.

Is your air filter clean also what about the fuel filter.

Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts all will read the codes that are stored and will tell you what needs tending to and can show you what and where that part is that is needed for repair.

No we have had all of those things replaced before the check engine light me on. WE put more oil in because it was low on the dip stick and we needed some more antifreeze. After putting both of them in the car did not change. They have changed the spark plugs and after doing so it will not start now. We were thinking that it is the sensor but we are not sure. Thank you all for your advice.

You speak of the sensor as if it is a singular.

There are many sensors used on a 94 engine. Throttle position, manifold absolute pressure, coolant temperature, engine speed sensor, air temperature, air pressure, oxygen, gear position, brake, and vehicle speed. That is just from memory.

TEST. TEST. TEST.

The sensor I described in the above post is a maintenance item. 99% it will be the sensor. If I'm wrong it'll cost you $1.50 and 1 minute to find out....

Had the same problem. brought it to three or four mechanics an no one knew what the problem was . I went with the prosess of illamination. It was the sensor at the air intake. You can try by disconnecting the wire on the intake and trying it if it runs. Then it's the mass air flow sensor. Good luck
