Opel Astra Problem

12/10/2010 1:10 AM

My Opel Astra (model997) Engine suddenly stops without any indication & if started again starts without any difficulty. this happens randomly once or two times in one hour. What could be the problem & solution. Please also note at times electronic fault indication comes & gets cleared after sometime.

It does sound electronic in nature. If the car starts when it is cold and only cuts out when it warms up, and when the engine cools it will start again, that is usually the problem.

Most mechanics are not electronic technicians so forget them. I would get a copy of the sensor and pick-up location chart from the dealer, and a can of freeze. You now, the can of instant ice. You can get some from computer stores or electronic supply stores. If all else fails go to the drug store and get a can there. It is identified as a burn reliever spray, not the ointment but the freeze spay; ask the druggiest.

Physically locate all the sensors and pickups on the engine. Run it until it stops. Spray each pick-up one at a time and try to start the engine. What you are doing is rapidly cooling each sensor to see if it will correct the problem. Make sure you use enough spray to cool down the sensors and pick-ups.

Remember you are testing one at a time. Once you think you have found the problem, run the engine again and retest just the suspected sensor to verify. If these are not the issues work your way out to the engine modules.

This all takes just a little time and a can or two of some freeze. This may all you need to find that gremlin.

With the limited info you supplied this is all I have for you.

Sounds like a faulty throttle position sensor or a loose electrical connection ck the harness and test the throttle position sensor for a fault. The easiest way would be to start the car and wiggle the connectors closest to the sensor if nothing happens then gently tap the sensor with the handle of a screw driver. If this is an issue the car will stall or stumble. If this is not the problem I would then go to power and ground distribution and start checking connections. Happy Hunting!

When the engine dies, check it for spark as soon as you can open the hood. If you have no spark, follow post #2. If you have spark, use a gasoline soaked rag to squeeze some gas into the air inlet. These tests should help narrow your search. Good luck.

I had this happen to a car over a two year period. Tried everything. Turned out to be the grounds for the computer and many of the auxiliary bits under the hood were all tied to what looked alike a pair of concentric daisies of push-on connectors. The grounding bolt was rusty, the body under the dasies was rusty and so were they. Cleaned everything up and the problem went away.

This was just before I was going to buy a new computer for $2000.

The reason I found this was I read a professional car mechanic magazine in a shop while I was waiting and the troubleshooting column said when all else fails, check the grounds.

actually when first diagnosing check grounds, I have seen many problems started with poor or no ground, most all computers apply power and switch ground to actuate, using the resistane of the coils to drop load on circuit to computer makes sense..

Had a Ford pick up that would do something like this and it turned out to be a very simple fix.

When the ignition module was replaced there needed to be heat paste put on the bottom of the module where it came in to contact with the heat sink.

By not doing this the module would over heat and shut off, often for only 5-10 minutes, it took weeks before I found someone who knew how to fix this problem.

May not help, but when hunting electrical gremlins anything could be happening.

Hi everybody, I live in thailand. I have a Opel Astra car and get the same problem that it s always stop. I suggest event , it show engine lamp before and suddenly stop. Because of catalytic converter determination. It easy to solve that plug or shorted sensor of catalytic converter. Now a day I can drive it smoothly.

Clear indication that Battery is going to fail. Voltage of one of the cells in battery is dipping momentarily, resulting in total battery voltage going done. Then it is recovering. This is the starting sympton of battery going to fail.

Thanks and regards

I have never ever had any problem with my Opel Astra. It's all a matter of not accelerating and wasting gas by immediately slowing down. The accelerator must be used to full advantage when you have a clear road ahead, viz. for getting ahead of the pack at the turn of traffic light to green and the car performs so beautifully, leaving every body enviously far behind. I have even been able to get to the next green light before it turns red and continue with greens all the way to my destination.

So, i suggest you review your driving pattern. Please also read the manual carefully, it's all there. I have enjoyed 11 Km/Lit. performance in hot (42° C), humid (95%RH) Chennai city driving with air conditioner turned up to maximum.

Hope this helps
