50 cy Motor Run on 60 cy Power.

12/11/2010 1:34 PM

I have a 1 rpm synchronous motor that is designed to be 1 rpm on 50 cycle power,

If i run it on 60 cycle power, how many seconds will it take to make the one revolution?

I'm not very smart. But, I think you have a motor driving a gear train than drives a shaft. Lets say that the 50 Hz motor drives a 50:1 gear reduction unit to give you a shaft speed of 1RPM.

So, at 60Hz you've got a 60 rpm motor driving a 50:1 gear box.

You do the math.

I did do the math, and thats why I was asking here, because what I calculated is not what the motor actually does do. Close but not quite exactly.

so I just wanted to see if anyone else comes up with the same answer that I did mathwise.

No, you go first. Remember, this is not a direct drive motor. The armature doesn't turn at 1 RPM, does it?

No it yes is a gearmotor. and of course tied to the frequency of the current.

OK I calculate that it should make a revolution in 50 seconds, but when I time the actual motor it does it in 48.5 seconds. which is right or wrong?

Your calculation of 50 seconds was correct, at least theoretically; are you sure that the frequency was precisely 60 Hz at the time of your test?

That would be 6/5th's RPM.

True,

but that equals how many seconds to make one complete revolution?

Long arm attached to the shaft, passing a exact spot on the bnch with WWV playing on the radio.

And Stopwatch too. tried both ways. same results
